File this one under Superbly Ironic Statements:

Unless we seriously rethink our understanding of monopoly power and the government’s role in protecting us from it, we may pay a steep price in the years to come.

Last time I checked, the only real monopolies in the world were the nation-states, who not only have no competition within their borders, they also enforce their monopolies with extortion and guns and threats of murder and kidnapping.

So what is the role of a violent super-monopoly in protecting me from an organization some people think might become monopolies because they’ve excelled in producing what I want through voluntary exchanges of goods and labor?

’Cuz I do want to rethink it, seeing as how I’m sure I’ve been paying a steep price for the real monopoly in the years gone by and in the year right now.
